Beer lovers attend beer festivals and events for many reasons. I attend festivals for four reasons; beer, community, food and entertainment. The Washington Brewers Festival is a special event for several reasons; it is over Father's Day weekend and it brings together over a hundred breweries from all over the state of Washington. This festival has been a tradition of my father’s and mine for several years. It is a time my father and I enjoy; we share beer samples and laugh for hours.
This year, while celebrating Father’s Day, I coordinated a social media experiment by enlisting four social influencers to join me in a collaborative blog piece. The teams I put together for collaborative pieces I call Brew HOPeratives. Check out that hashtag as it grows in popularity, #BrewHOPeratives.
The idea of collaborative social media pieces came directly from the craft beer culture. Breweries have been helping each other out for many years. Brewers have told me; if they have questions or need help problem solving, they turn to their fellow craft brewer for assistance. Surprise! They get help. Independent breweries know if one craft brewery is successful, they all are successful. Thus, I turned to my fellow social influencers for assistance.
The team was made up of two Instagrammers, one Facebook blogger, one YouTube vlogger and myself. They, like myself, all have their own reasons for attending the Washington Brewers Festival and I hope their words, pictures and video inspire you to attend a beer festival this summer.
Sarah - HikesForBeer
Sarah shows off her thrill for finding new craft beer favorites and how she shares that experience with fellow beer lovers. Alongside Instagram, Sarah reviews and rates beers on Untappd at username Sarahamity
JOHN - BreweryHunter
As seen in his Instagram photos, John's excitement is definitely centered around the complexities and aesthetics of craft beer.
Lyra - Beer, She Wrote
Lyra has been in the craft beer industry since 2010, and was the third woman in the state of Washington to pass the Certified Cicerone exam. So, it is no surprise that she is comfortable talking with new people about their Washington craft beer experiences. In addition to Facebook blog, you can find her on Untappd at username: BeerSheWrote.
When you’re at a beer festival with 130 breweries, 500 beers and only eight taste tokens, it’s hard to narrow down your choices. How exactly was I going to make this interesting?
I’m a fan of social experiments, especially ones that involve happy people drinking beer, so I decided that I would ask eight random people what I should drink next. My aim was to show the incredible variety that the annual Washington Brewers Festival attracts.
It was a complete success. Eight strangers allowed me to take their picture, (nine including Ben, who’s suggested beer wasn’t actually available) and once they understood what I was doing, didn’t seem to mind too much that I had completely butted in on their drinking experience. All in all, it was a fascinating way to spend a Friday evening.
So, what did people want me to drink? Below are each person’s name and their pick in drinking order:
The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of doing this again next year. Simply, it was just a fun strategy and a good way to meet new people who like drinking good beer as much as I do. Cheers!
Travis - Travis Loves Beer
Travis loves his hair, his jokes, but most importantly, his beer. He travels all around the Pacific Northwest visiting breweries, taprooms and craft beer stores. The special thing about Travis is that he comfortable with the awkward moments in his YouTube videos. Travis can, also, be found on Facebook and Instagram; Travis Loves Beer and BundyMania, respectively.
I hope you have enjoyed our social media experiment. Again, I would like to thank Sarah (@HikesForBeer), John (@BreweryHunter), Lyra (Beer, She Wrote) and Travis (TravisLovesBeer) for all their excitement and work on this social media experiment. I would, also, like to thank the Washington Beer Commission for sponsoring our endeavor by provide us media passes.
Before I sign off, I would like to share some my Instagram photos at ABeerdedGentleman. As you will seen in my Instagram photos, I love beer, but showcase the TAPestry of craft beer culture.
